Warehouse

From the knitting machines, stockings are taken into the service warehouse where they are given out for further stages in their assembly; this includes linking, seaming, inspection, and correcting, after which they are returned to the warehouse for counting and checking and when they are finally returned after correcting and inspection, they are sent from the rough warehouse to the dyeing warehouse where they are sorted in batches for dispatch to the dye works.

The warehouse, in addition to its main function of checking the stockings as they go through their various processes of manufacture, also serves as a very fine initial training school. Girls entering the factory straight from school are first given a period of work checking and handling stockings in this section, which enables them to get the “feel” of the product and also to learn something about the various processes involved in the making of a fully-fashioned stocking.
